Tri Color Radishes With Olive, Gouda Goat Cheese and Citrus Vinaigrette


In Europe the radish is only a minor salad plant, but in China and Japan it is an important root vegetable, eaten both raw, preserved and cooked, and often carved to make a decorative garnish. In parts of Asia, a special variety, the Mougri radish, is grown for its long edible seed pods.
Wild radishes, Rapharus raphanistrum L. , are coomon on wasteland by the sea and in the sandy areas inland throughout the British Isles and much of Europe. Subspecies rhaphanistrum, which is an annual weed of wasteland and fields, has white flowers in southern Europe, yellow in the north.Subspecies maritimus is found on cliffs and sandy seashores in estern Europe and the northern Black sea cost; it is a perennial with a thick root and sulphur-yellow flowers. Another subspecies, subsprostratus Thell.; confined to Aegean region, has pale lilac flowers with darker veins. Two other subspecie, both usually found as weeds, occur in southwest Europe. A wild radish, var.raphanistroides, is found in Japan, but is not clear whether this is a native variety or the cultivated radish gone wild.

Radish and health:
A medical anthropologist Dr John Heinerman radishes for removing hard fat deposits is a story dealt with a remedy employed by Kanpo doctors in the eastern hills of Kyoto. These doctors, while practicing alternative folk medicine, were all regular M.D.s and had previously graduated from the prestigious Kyoto University School of Medicine. The remedy employed for reducing and eliminating solidified deposits of hard fat imbedded in body tissue, consisted of vegetable drink made with carrot and white daikon redish. Equal portions of grated carrot and daikon (1 tbsp. each) were added to 2 cups of water with 7 drops of soy sauce, 1 tsp. lemon juice, and a pinch of kelp and allowed to boil for 5 minutes. The broth was later strained and 1 cup prescribed twice daily, in the morning and again at night.
When it comes to using radishes on recipes, they can be added to salads, soups, roasting, juicing etc..
I used different color of radishes on a salad i made in this recipe.

You can serve this fresh salad with a baked fish, organic marinated chicken breast ( balsamic vinegar, salt, black pepper, fresh cilantro, olive oil), saute tofu with vegetable and any kind of bean. You can improvise any combination incorporating radishes into your cooking experience.
